Key Findings on California's Electricity Consumption

California is at the forefront of transitioning to a clean energy future. Analyzing its electricity consumption patterns provides valuable insights into its progress and challenges. Here are the key findings:

  • California's 2022 electricity consumption of 287,826 GWh could produce approximately 3.84 billion Tesla Model Y vehicles, with each requiring 75 kWh of battery capacity.

  • Urban areas like Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino lead in electricity consumption due to high population and economic activity, while hotter regions show higher usage for air conditioning.

  • From 1990 to 2022, electricity usage generally increased, with notable drops during the 2009 financial crisis and the 2020 pandemic.

  • As of 2024, 61% of California's electricity comes from renewable sources. The state aims for 100% zero-carbon electricity by 2045, supported by major investments in solar, wind, and battery storage.
